We have found that many people have trouble when it comes to resetting their consumer units. We hope this guide will help you troubleshoot any problems.
In the event of a Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB) or Residual Current Device (RCD) switching off or tripping due to a fault the following action should be taken:
IF AN MCB TRIPS
· Switch the MCB on
· If the MCB trips again switch off/unplug all equipment on this circuit
· Switch the MCB on
To identify which appliance causes the MCB to trip
· Switch on/plug in each appliance in turn until the MCB trips again
· Switch off/unplug the faulty appliance and DO NOT attempt to use again before seeking qualified advice
· Switch the MCB back on
· If no fault can be identified and the MCB cannot be switched back on contact an electrician.
IF AN RCD TRIPS
· Switch the RCD on by pushing up
· If the RCD trips again switch off all MCB’S protected by the RCD
· Switch the RCD back on
· Switch on each MCB in turn
· When the MCB with the faulty circuit is switched on the RCD will trip.
To identify which appliance causes the RCD to trip
· Switch off/un-plug all appliances on the faulty circuit
· Switch the RCD on
· Switch on/ plug in each appliance in turn until the RCD trips again
· Switch off/un-plug the faulty appliance and DO NOT attempt to use again before seeking qualified advice.
· Switch the RCD back on
· If no fault can be identified and the RCD cannot be switched back on contact an electrician.
TESTING
· The RCD should be tested quarterly by pressing the button marked T or TEST.
· The device should switch off the supply and should then be switched on to restore the supply.
· If the device does not switch off when the button is pressed inform an electrician as soon as possible.
